06 Jun Elect Greg Duckworth to State House, by Kevin Funderburk
Almost 20 years ago I sent my first editorial to the paper. Now it is time for the second. Greg Duckworth should be elected to S.C. House 104. I met Greg Duckworth almost five years ago when my son crossed over from Cub Scout Pack 800 to Boy Scout Troop 888. Greg was the Scoutmaster of Troop 888 at the time. The first thing I learned about Greg is that he is a man of his word.
If he says he will do something, it will be done. Over the years I observed how he has always been available to help any Scout, or parent of a Scout, with any need or question that popped up. He has worked many long hours to help the troop grow and prosper, and he has helped many Scouts reach the rank of Eagle, the highest rank in Scouting.
When the troop acquired a bus, Greg was the one who acquired his commercial driver’s license so we would have someone to drive the bus on our monthly camping trips and to summer camp. He has sat many long hours behind the wheel through wind, rain, and snow, driving into the early morning hours of the next day, while the rest of us slept. The man is dedicated to what he believes in. Even though Greg is no longer the Scoutmaster of the troop, he remains very dedicated to the troop and is in charge of the Venturing Crew, which is an offshoot of the troop for the older Scouts.
Greg is himself an Eagle Scout. The Scout Law states that “a Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.” I’ve never met anyone who meets these tenets of scouting, and of life, the way Greg Duckworth does. I’ve always told him that he reminds me of a young Abraham Lincoln. Greg Duckworth is the man for S.C. House 104. He is a man of honor, integrity and amazing character. He has my vote, and I hope he has yours on Election Day on June 12.
