01 Jun House Approves Final Roads Bill; Sends Legislation to Governor’s Desk for Signature
(Columbia, SC) – House Speaker Jay Lucas (District 65-Darlington) issued the following statement after the House concurred with the Senate’s amendment to S. 1258. This bill allocates through bonding and other means over $4 billion for road and bridge repair over the next ten years and includes comprehensive DOT reform.
“Today is truly a great day for the people of South Carolina because we finally have a roads bill. Although this bill is not perfect, the House and Senate have worked together, made tough decisions and followed through with our promise to fix South Carolina’s roads.
“The House started the roads bill conversation in November 2014 and there is no doubt that the people of South Carolina have given us the resolve and determination to see this bill through. For the sake of our citizens’ safety and our economy’s sustainability, I ask Governor Haley to sign this bill into law as soon as it arrives on her desk. The people of South Carolina should not have to wait any longer for their dangerous roads and bridges to be repaired,” Speaker Lucas stated.
Note: The Senate agreed to an amendment late last night after Speaker Lucas made an impassioned floor speech yesterday encouraging action on a plan. Once ratified, the bill will head to the Governor’s desk for signature.
